Hello, fellow wanderlusters!
If you’ve been following The Inspiration Highway for a while, you know we have a total weakness for places where the veil between the real world and the storybook feels just a little bit thinner. Recently the highway led us to the salt-sprayed, cobbled, and delightfully moody shores of Whitby.
Whitby isn't just a seaside town; it’s a living, breathing gothic novel. One minute you’re eating the best fish and chips of your life according to the Carnivore, and the next, you’re looking up at the skeletal remains of an abbey that feels like it’s guarding ancient secrets.
Magical Things to Do in Whitby
Whether you’re a seeker of spirits or a lover of coastal charm, Whitby has a way of casting a spell on you. Here are our "must-dos" for a whimsical weekend:
Ascend the 199 Steps: Take the climb from the Old Town up to St. Mary’s Church. Legend says if you count them correctly, you might just earn a wish (though we usually lose track by step 42 because ya know, kids.).
The Skeleton of Whitby Abbey: Perched dramatically on the cliff, these ruins inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Visit at dusk when the crows are circling - it’s hauntingly beautiful and perfect for your inner goth. Fossil Hunting at Saltwick Bay: Just a short walk away, you can find "snakestones" (ammonites). The locals used to believe St. Hilda turned real snakes into stone to clear the land for her abbey.
The Screaming Tunnel: For those who like a thrill, find this narrow passage in the old town. It offers a "secret" framed view of the 199 steps that feels like looking through a telescope into the past.
Falling Foss Tea Garden: A short drive into the nearby woods reveals a real-life fairy glen.
. Sip tea next to a cascading waterfall, dip your toes in and feel the forest magic.
When it comes to resting your weary head, we found the absolute crown jewel of Whitby stays: Wesley Chapel.
Part of the CyanaCottages collection, this isn’t just a holiday rental, it’s a masterclass in a chic home away from home. Staying in a this enigmatic home over three floors, feels inherently mystical, but the way this space has been transformed is pure luxury.
The Vibe: Imagine high ceilings, original features, and views to die for. It’s spacious, spotlessly clean, and somehow manages to be both grand and incredibly cozy at the same time.
The Highlights:
The Hot Tub: After a day of wind-whipped coastal walks, sinking into the private hot tub under the stars was the ultimate indulgence.
The Views: From the windows, you get stunning glimpses of the town and that iconic Whitby skyline.
The Location: Tucked away in a quiet spot but only a 5-minute wander from the Abbey and the harbor. You get the peace of the heavens with the heart of the town at your doorstep.
The Little Touches: From the crackling fireplace to the plush beds that felt like sleeping on a cloud, Wesley Chapel provides a stylish home from home to relax in and feels a world away from the busy streets of Whitby.
There is a soft, haunting beauty to Whitby that is hard to find anywhere else. Most people know it for its dramatic abbey ruins, but the real magic is found in the quiet moments. It’s in the way the morning mist clings to the masts of the fishing boats, and the way the sunset turns the North Sea into a sheet of twinkling gold shimmers.
To truly experience Whitby, you have to let yourself get lost. Wander away from the main tourist paths and slip into the 'yards' - those tiny, narrow alleyways that weave between the houses like hidden arteries. Here, you’ll find secret gardens, tiny doorways, and the kind of peace that makes the rest of the world feel very far away. We just love meandering here thinking about the colourful characters that once walked those narrow alleys.
Whitby is a place where every corner tells a story, and is the perfect place to write your own. If you’re looking for a getaway that’s a little bit spooky, a little bit salty, and a whole lot of magical, this is it.
