Lifestyle: Top events happening around Yorkshire during summer

Whether you fall into the camp of 'you only get 18 summers....' or 'survival will do, give me all the coffee and gin' chances are you are frantically scouring the internet to find out what's happening over summer to keep you and your brood busy.

Let's not forget that as we only get what feels like a micro second of summer in this country, that it's also the best time to get outside and explore for us all. After a weird few years, we all need to feel some normality and create a summer to remember.

Thankfully there are an enormous amount of events going on this year, with all of the old favourites back in heroic fashion, despite our slightly strange, limbo-esque, post-pandemic world (fingers crossed) and many new events.

If you're from God's own county, or Yorkshire as most folks call it, you will know it's a huge area to cover and most people travel around an hour or two from home for a day trip, so here are our best picks for North, South, East and West Yorkshire, with links to other resources to explore at your leisure.

First up, West Yorkshire  with this fantastic family fun event...

Funtopia festival with dinosaur encounters at wakefield | Castle Grove Wakefield

Sun 7th August

If you took all your family's favourite things, like soft play, rides, crafts, circus, nerf wars, games and music, plus added dinosaurs, you'd get Funtopia. It's an event not to be missed! A family of 4 ticket is under £25 which amazing value and you can just turn up on the day (although worth checking before setting off to avoid disappointment)

Next up, East Yorkshire and another fantastic arts and culture family event...

Freedom Festival | Hull City Centre - various | Friday 26th August - Sunday 4th September |

Back for 2022 as a 9 day festival taking place all across the previous City of Culture and home of slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce, it brings artists from all over the world to create art and events around the theme of Freedom. From huge night time spectaculars that wow, to quirky street level performances and installations, there is something for everyone at this festival. Plus it's a cool waterfront city to walk around and grab a bite on the marina. It is mostly FREE to enjoy with the odd ticketed performance. Visit the website for more details.

Next we journey to the best of South Yorkshire....

Freshly Squeezed Weekend | Sheffield Creative Quarter | 30 & 31 July |

Sheffield are hosting a series of Out and About Weekenders all through summer focusing on different themes and providing family friendly activities for all. Freshly Squeezed is their musical offering and looks set to be a blinder. It's FREE to attend and also a cool place to wander around and grab a bite to eat.

And then onto North Yorkshire....

Whitby Folk Festival | Whitby - various | 20th -26th August |

Whitby is the home of many a folk legend and of course, Count Dracula, but is also a beautiful Gothic seaside town with more character than you can shake a stick at. During August for one week it will be buzzing with even more life than usual with a full to bursting programme of music, storytelling, workshops and children's activities. It is a ticketed event ranging at around £50 for an adult and £14 for a junior for the week, but cheaper prices are available for early booking.
