How to get started with wedding planning

Anyone that's planned a wedding will know the utter rollercoaster of emotions you feel and the crazy time warp you enter as you get embroiled in all of the wedmin that goes with it.

As a very recent bride myself, I had great intentions of blogging all about the entire wedding process but save for a couple of posts (here and here) and talking about the proposal (here) I just didn't have the time. Between a demanding full time job, doing a part time MSc, running a house, family stuff and having some semblance of a social life, blogging about my wedding just fell off the radar.

Now, with a bit of time to reflect but not so much time that it isn't still as fresh in my memory as if it happened yesterday, I'm ready to commit some of it to my blog.

I can still feel the mix of nerves but excitement and then relief after we'd said our vows. Not being able to meet our loved ones eyes in case it gave away my emotions. The warm sun on my skin as we made promises to each other surrounded by nature.
I might write some thoughts on here about wedding planning and maybe throw in some DIY posts too, as we literally did make everything ourselves from scratch.

I've got soooo much good advice about how to save money on your wedding that it'd be a shame not to pass that information onto newly engaged couples standing on the precipice of this huge change in their lives. Unless you have event management experience, this is probably the largest and is definitely the most important thing you've ever planned.

One of the first things you think about when you get engaged, perhaps after you've discussed when you'd like to tie the knot, is finding a wedding venue. Before you lose your heart to places on pinterest or set your mind on that destination wedding or castle, the first thing you should do is have an idea of the number of guests and a rough idea of budget.

Recent years has seen a number of new wedding venues appear in Yorkshire to add to the already lovely stock of stately homes, hotels and inns. As someone who has very recently trawled the wedding venue circuit for my own wedding, I thought it might be useful and fun to write about what I found. This list is clearly not a complete run down, as there are too many to mention in one post and I saw a lot of venues(!), so do drop me a comment if you feel I've missed one that should make the list or would like another venue post.

Oaklands

This new venue is simply rustic perfection and perfect for the boho bride or trendy couple looking to host a wedfestival. Out in the middle of East Yorkshire's largest woodland overlooking a lake, it provides a fantastic backdrop for lovely photographs and privacy for those not wanting to share their day with other weddings. The teepee offers warm and nordic interiors but for those that find hiring a field and everything that goes with it just too much like hard work, you'll find a bar and toilets in the wooden shooting hut also on the site. I loved this place but the teepee wedding was not for my other half, so sadly I had to move on.

Saltmarshe Hall

Saltmarshe Hall is where my special day took place and is an intimate country house set in 17 acres of beautiful gardens with a river running at the edge of the land, providing stunning photographs. It offers the more traditional elements of a country house but with modern, contemporary country styling surrounded by beautiful countryside. It also has a lovely woodland area and is licensed for those who want to get married outdoors. It's the ideal halfway house between those that want an outdoor wedding but also want the backup of an indoor venue should the great British weather play its usual tricks. The owners are also charming and very open to ideas about how to use the venue so you can put your own stamp on the day. It really was a beautiful venue and we can't wait to go back to relive our memories of such an amazing day.

North Star Club

The North Star Club is one of the most recent additions to the wedding scene and I had the pleasure of staying quite recently, which I wrote about here so I can attest to how absolutely jaw droppingly beautiful it is. It has 200 acres of woodland, cabins for all the family to stay in and some enviable spaces to say your 'I Do's', like around the beautiful open campfire. You can dine inside the Woodshed, which has the most amazing furnishings and a cosy vibe, or outside if you're lucky enough to get the weather.

Rise Hall

Rise Hall isn't that new now, as I vividly remember watching the progression of the restoration on TV in 2011 (which I wrote about here), but it has slowly undergone various improvements to make it a lovely stately home today. It is sprawling and could easily fit a very large wedding but our intimate affair may have rattled around a little bit in the space. The bedrooms have a real boutique feeling to them and the grounds are lovely too. It also has a fab communal kitchen and games room which families with kids would love.

I could go on but I'll leave it to you to tell me if this is something you want to hear more about. Do you like wedding posts? Are you interested in DIY projects or ways to save money? I'd also love to see your wedding pictures so pop them over for us all to oooh and ahhh over.
